Do I have Dyslexia?

Why do you need to know? This may seem a strange question, but the answer can lead you in the best direction.

Are you just curious to understand why learning can be challenging sometimes?

For the curious, you have the option of self-evaluating. Most dyslexics will exhibit at least 10 of the 37 Common Characteristics listed in How Can I Tell? These characteristics can vary from day-to-day or minute-to-minute. There is also an On-Line Assessment below which gives an indication of the extent of your dyslexia.

Have you been told it is a requirement for school?

You may have been told that you have to have an Educational Psychology Assessment to get into a school for dyslexics, in order to get extra help in your existing school, college or university. We have yet to find a website that lists all Educational Psychologists, and from our experience, they are found by referral.

Do you want to do something about it? and if so:

  • Do you want to get to the cause of your dyslexia, or
  • Do you want to treat the symptoms?

What can you do about it? Are you the sort of person who wants to get to the cause of your dyslexia, to thoroughly understand how you think and learn? Do you want to be able to do what everyone else is doing, but do it your way? Or do you prefer to take all the accommodations that the system offers?
We all have our personal preferences. An Educational Psychology Assessment may recommend accommodations such as: extra time for tests, a scribe or voice recognition software, a room to take exams on your own, away from distractions. It may suggest tutoring which has its roots in the phonetic reading system. The degree of success will depend on where you are on the continuum between sound-based and image-based learning.
If you want to get to the cause of your challenges, then we recommend you visit a Davis Dyslexia Correction Facilitator who will conduct a Perceptual Ability Assessment. If you have this ability, if you know what your challenges are, and if you want to do something about them, a Davis Dyslexia Correction program is suitable. These programs are one week long, one-on-one. They provide the tools, the firm foundations, the exercises and the understanding that will enable you to achieve your goals, and fulfill your potential – your way!
